Work and the economy: trends that might impact you post grad: Overqualified workers: someone who has a university degree, working at a job that required at most a high school education, younger workers were more at risk, immigrants, commerce/arts students. Less likely were union workers & students who studied science and health in school: younger workers were more likely to be overqualified, but older people had higher chance to remain overqualified. Expansion of contract work: contract employees often don"t have job security, makes it hard to get a mortgage, don"t get medical coverage, Disappearance of company-sponsored pension plans: no pension plans, our generation less likely to have a company supported pension plan. Dramatic changes in the past 3 decades. Functional/internal flexibility, allows employers to move workers from one job to another. Numerical flexibility, allows employers to adjust the size of their workforce by easily hiring/firing workers based on their labor demand.
