Parental investment theory - trivers, 1972: gender difference in investment causes there to be different strategies to obtaining a mate. Sex that invests less initially and continuously (men) are more opportunistic. Sex that invests most (women) are choosy: men and women have different long term and short term mating strategies and look for different things. Higher investing sex = choosy - long term mating. Lower investing sex = opportunistic - short-term copulation or extra pair copulation. Any investment by the parent in an individual offspring that increases that offspring"s chance of surviving and reproducing at the expense of investing in alternative forms of reproductive investments. Men can alter their behaviour or appearance to appeal to a woman"s preferences. Dishonestly tell the opposite sex that you are a good mate when you aren"t. Women learn to detect dishonest signals, so men become better at signaling etc. spiral. Honest signals: reflect someone"s reproductive potential.
