History of did/mpd: only 77 cases between 1791 and 1962. Three faces of eve (1957: treated a women who had three personalities, 25 years later, no additional case seen. 8 did cases in 1944-70; 36 from 1970-79. 171 outcome analyses in 1984 (almost all of them in the us) Internal self helper (50-80% of cases) psychiatrist alter; seems to know a lot about the host and the situation; usually objective, unemotional; will make suggestions to therapist to where to look for problems etc. 50% of cases have more than 10 alters. 1994: us task force on health care 10% 1998: psychiatric hospital admissions 1% (actual prevalence of population at large is significantly lower than this) Females: 1. 4% counted in assessments: us and canada make up 70 to 80% of all cases. Problem: that they report these cases after exploration under hypnosis. Etiology: sociocultural model, individual unconsciously plays culturally-sanctioned dissociative role (not faking it; they believe these behaviours are acceptable)
