Who genetics are inherited from parents to offspring. Chromosomes and genes: chromosomes contain all your genetic information. When a sperm penetrates an ovum it creates a zygote. Human chromosomes contain between 30-40 thousand genes a zygote contains 46 chromosomes, 23 from each parent. Cell division: each parent can produce more than 8 million combinations. Monozygotic twins generally identical same sperm and ovum one zygote that split into two. Dizygotic twins share 50% of the genes two different zygotes from the moment of conception. Sex chromosomes: the male determines the gender of the child the 23rd pair determines the baby"s gender. Female can only pass on an x. Male has 1x and 1y chromosome therefore the male can pass on an x or a y. Phenotype: the expression of an individual"s genotype in terms of observable characteristics genotypes can express into different forms of phenotypes: simple dominant- recessive inheritance. Homozygous: when two alleles have the same effect on the phenotype.
