Believed that people perceive the whole stimulus rather than each individual part. This means that they believed that people do not put together parts of the stimulus, they just perceive the whole stimulus. Motion is an emergent property of a sequence of pictures. The perception of the movie in its entirety is something more than the collection of thousands of still photographs. You could sit down and analyze every photography, but it would never provide the same experience as you would get from watching the movie itself. Came up with laws that describe how we perceive visual input. They believed that we are either born with these laws of organization or grouping tendencies (called the gestalt principles) or that we acquire them very rapidly.
