Plato and aristotle believe that there is a right way to live; there is potential to live better or worse lives. What makes political institutions legitimate is the extent to which they get us to live the correct way; not to allow us to live however we want, but to get us to live well. We will discuss how we transitioned from the early modern period ancient classical outlook to the beginnings of our modern world. Plato answers these questions over 10 chapters we will be reading 9, slowly. Socrates got plato to see the critical importance of virtue. He believed that a virtuous life was a good life and the best life that a person would be able to live. This is the central argument of the republic; this is what plato tries to convince you of. For plato, a philosopher is a lover of truth. A philosopher seeks the truth no matter what the (cid:272)o(cid:374)se(cid:395)ue(cid:374)(cid:272)es.
