Interference with the filtering of external stimuli which affects a person"s thoughts, feelings, perceptions and overall behaviors. Equal distribution between men and women, but later onset in women. Estrogen is a protective factor and delays onset. Schizophrenia is a mixture of positive and negative symptoms. 2 or more of the following, each have to be present for a significant portion of time during a 1 month period. At least one must be 1, 2, or 3: delusions, hallucinations, disorganized speech, disorganized or catatonic behavior, negative symptoms. Continuous signs of disturbance for at least 6 months. A delusion is a false fixed belief. Believes they"re being watched or plotted against. Believes they have abnormalities in their body. May see or hear things that aren"t there but are real to them. Lessening of normal social and interpersonal behavior. Anhedonia = lack of pleasure in thing that are usually pleasurable. Ambivalence = concurrent opposing feelings making it hard to make decisions.
