Black appeal radio : the middle class teenage was listening to black appeal radio. The teenager : concept that did not exist until after wwii. Once the us became an industrial power house because of the war there were more education/job opportunities which led to this group. Children of the baby-boom were the first to be the teenager. New idea that young people may like something different. New market; targeting youth culture with fashion. movies, music, etc. They were discovering black appeal radio as they didn"t like what was being produced in mainstream pop. Doggie in the window by patti page : #1 in 1953. Mainstream pop was very safe and predictable partly due to the war. Crossover hits : r&b hits landing on the popular charts. Charts were based off of people calling into local record stores and buying/asking for particular records.
