Syntax: arrangement of words and phrases to make understandable and effective sentences in a language. Grammar: the entirety of the structure and system of a language: contains syntax and morphology, phonology and semantics. Intonation and cadence: the different ways that the voice moves with speaking. Understanding language is associating words with abstract concepts: understanding contextual meaning, having communicative competence. Body language is a communicative form, but still extralinguistic. Languages aren"t ranked or rated, the goal of linguists is to understand: linguistics: a science relying on empirical observations. Describe, not prescribe: description explains how things are, not how they should be: prescriptivism: after the language has been described, explicit rules for using, mental grammar: includes different components like phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics. Phonetics: how to make sounds, what they sound like: phonology: how sounds are combined and organized in the mind, morphology: how words are formed, syntax: how sentences are formed, semantics: what words and sentences mean.
