HTHSCI 2H03 Study Guide - Fall 2018, Comprehensive Midterm Notes - Metabolism, Blood Plasma, Protein
Document Summary
Week 1: lecture 1: pharmacokinetics- drug administration and absorption. 4 main processes: absorption, distribution, metabolism, elimination. Topical: skin inhalers- asthma, copd, eye/ear drops. Intramuscular- vaccines: transdermal- lipid soluble (oral contraceptives) Drug absorption movement of drug from site of administration across body membranes and into circulatory system. Drug very water soluble- then easily administered by iv but not fat soluble drugs or else clogs circ. System iv administration skips process of absorption fast onset of action expected. Drug very poorly water soluble non polar fat soluble- drug (cid:272)an"t be administered but iv: all other routes require absorption, oral administration most common form of drug administration, slower onset of action should be expected. Passive diffusion: small in molecular size non polar non ionized lipid soluble to pass through biological membranes, movement dictated by concentration gradient. Carrier mediated large in molecular size/polar- water soluble active transport across biological membranes in order to reach target site. Absorption of drugs via oral route in stomach.
