How did sanitation develop? in ancient times, already concerns with drinking water taste temperature. Egypt: introduction of alum to remove suspended particles. Sun rays remove organics in water for disinfection. Started to understand that water could carry sediments that can lead to disease. Roman army made supply to have clean drinking water. important for military issues, aqueducts came into play. Cities: extensive system to flush wastewater, would dispose of the wastewater outside of the city. Renaissance (1400 ad +): started to rediscover writing from roman and greeks (idea of healthy water re-emerged) In 17th and 18th centuries, the first studies on water treatment had been experimented. 1860s: first water quality testing in new jersey, discovery of pathogens and microbes were beginning to occur. 18070s 1900s: introduction of large scale water treatment large-scale use of sand, filters, iron sulphate, etc. Also coincided with the time of pathogen discovery.
