Although both of these forms of television programming maintain popularity, it is clear that reality television holds dominance over soap operas. This essay will discuss the decline of soap opera popularity, and explain how this decline came to be through three main arguments. The first argument in relation to soap opera decline is the changing demographic of audiences from the 1960" s-1980"s, to modern audiences in the 21st century. Secondly, how the stereotypical portrayals of gender in soap operas negatively influence their popularity among women. Lastly, how the rise of consumerism plays a key role in the decline of soap operas and rise of reality television among audiences as well as advertisers.
