Chapter 13: homo sapiens & the evolution of modern human behavior. Fossils classified as anatomically modern homo sapiens share a number of important derived features with contemporary humans. Smaller faces and smaller teeth than earlier hominins. Favored by natural selection because people did not use their teeth as tools as much as the earlier people had. Face is flat and tucked under brain case. No agreement about functional significance of chin. Like modern people, they had high foreheads, rounded back of cranium and reduced brow ridges. Longer limbs with thinner walled bones, longer more lightly built hands, shorter thicker pubic bones, distinctive shoulder blades: although they are less robust than neanderthals they were still more heavily built than contemporary humans. Erik trinkaus suggests this is due to the fact that people relied less on body strength and more on elaborate tools and technological innovations to do their work.
