Formation of large scale structure in the universe. The largest known structure: the sloan great wall. The universe is homogenous on scales >~300mpc and isotropic. If the universe is homogenous, isotropic, infinite, and unchanging, the entire sky should be as bright as the surface of the sun (in fact, it should be infinitely bright) In the past, galaxies were closer together; at some time in the past, at this rate of expansion, galaxies would all have been at the same place. Doesn"t mean that big bang happened at a particular place. Imagine a balloon with coins (galaxies) stuck to it, as we blow up the balloon, the coins all move farther and father apart. There is, on the surface f the balloon, no. The same balloon can be used to explain cosmological redshift. A self-consistent description requires a general relativity but many aspects can be understood in newtonian terms.
