Arc is the study of past material culture the only way we can understand evolution/developments in culture. Historical scientists collects data and conducts experiences of the past and prehistorical times. Every view of the past is a product of its own time fluctuating. Speculative phase when we as humans (victorians) actually got interested in our humanistic past: origin of arc. Uniformitarism: geologically ancient conditions where similar or uniform to those of our own time. Introduced by lyell: applied to human past. Darwinism: principles of evolution (survival of the fittest) can be applied to social organization culture as learn and passed on by generations. 3 age system: hoare recognized stone, brass, and iron artifacts, different levels of intelligence, different tool making capabilities. Paleolithic (old stone age) neolithic (new stone age) Tylor - societies evolved from state of savagery (primitive hunting) through barbarianism (simple farming) to civilization (highest form of society)
