The elecion of 1911 had a profound efect on economic policy in avering a major reorientaion of canadian-american trade relaions: afected the history of conscripion, government unsympatheic to french-canadian and roman catholic feelings about wwi. We intend to examine systemaically the shape of voters" actual response in the light of the text of the reciprocity argument, as well as in terms of the sociological and party poliical factors at work. Here we have an opportunity to assess the relaive explanatory power of models emphasizing material self-interest, the sociology of aitude formaion and personal inluence, and the role of party organizaion. 1911 elecion saw a liberal majority of 50 turn into a conservaive majority of 47.
