Reading notes for topic i: the historical stage. The following notes take up the reading by philpott. Remember that the first two readings (mazower, howard) deal with what i called in lectures the long nineteenth century from 1789-1945. These readings pay attention to political change in europe in this time period. Europe could be: fascist, communist, republican, liberal, catholic and authoritarian. These kinds of answers describe different kinds of political regimes. [one further and fairly obvious point which you will have noted in these readings: of these various historical possibilities, fascism, communism and catholic authoritarianism are variations of authoritarianism, republicanism and liberalism are compatible with democracy]. However there is a feature of european political life which goes unnoticed if we look just at these kinds of answers to this question. One feature of european political life which went relatively unquestioned in the long 19th century" was the way in which europe had become organized as a society of states.
