Missionaries had the goal of colonization in mind: 1) provided healthcare 2)provided education 3) recorders of writing/non-oral tradition. Invented a writing system of inuit language with less emphasis on verbal culture. Goal to remove inuit faith in exchange for catholicism/christianity. They aimed to control familial relations through ending plural marriages/polygamy, saw the inuit way of life as uncivilized, men forced to choose between 2 wives seperating the family unit. Told their identity is shameful; morally wrong; traditional practices forbidden and seenas savage. Shamed by their own loss of culture as well as the practices. Young people involved in crime, sexual abuse, drugs and alcohol lack feeelings of closeness and identity. In regards to being lgbtq in nunavut (~14:50-30:00), was being gay supported/safe for the young. Often difficult: the history of colonialism has made government goals precedent. For lqbtq, they are at the bottom of the priority list; loss of cultural identity of the group only makes this harder.
