The veneration of the virgin mary appears in literature once christianity starts spreading over. But the figure of mary in literature and the visual arts also shows traces of more ancient cultures. In the course of time the image of mary changes thoroughly, and so do the functions attributed to her. Perhaps her most spectacular appearance is in the literary cult of courtly love in the middle ages. From the gospel of luke we go to dante"s divine comedy, where the figure of mary, and its worldly counterpart beatrice, define dante"s vision of heaven. We trace the theme into the 20th century, with thomas mann"s novel the holy. Sinner, a parody of the notion of immaculate conception. With advent of christianity, traditional image of women in art is changed by arrival of new supreme role model: virgin mary.
