Code of 1804 = mixture of old law & number of new ideas from french revolution. Its 2281 articles have roots in customary law, roman law, ordinances of chancellor. Daguesseau & works of jurists such as domat & pothier. After belgium was annexed by france, french law came 1797 into force. Netherlands: codification was part & parcel of reform programme in 1795. King louis of holland found compromise between roman-dutch & french introduction of this code in 1809. When william i was king in netherlands he wanted a more national codification (civil law) meaning the existing french codes needed to be replaced by dutch codes. In 1814 a committee embarked on this task. Belgium was added to kingdom 1816 draft submitted to committee of 3 belgian jurists. Big difference between kemper & nicolai in legal tradition clashes frustrated work. 1816 draft was rejected & draft of 1820 as well rejected.
