Millenial resistance in indonesia: some peasant movements were millennial. They sometimes called up the muslim idea of a mahdi, who would come to purify islam, or more often, a pre- Muslim javanese belief in the arrival of a "just prince" a ratu adil, who would establish a new kingdom with justice for all and prosperity without taxation or oppression. Sometimes the millennial prophecy could take on antiforeign or anti-dutch overtones. None of these movements provided effective opposition to the government, but they contained beliefs that could later be used to mobilize the peasantry for other and more modernizing ends. Nativist movement: the sarekat islam used the reference to islam as a principal factor to indentify commercial interests that were neither european nor chinese. They began by boycotting chinese merchants, playing down the anti-chinese element and introducing the promise of a better life through political independence.
