1. 5. 2 thomas hobbes and the pursiut of self-interest. According to hobbes every human being has interests, not all of which can be satisfied at once a battle of everybody against everybody else. In the absence of a state there are no duties on anybody to respect the interests of others. A duty exists only if it is in the interest of the duty-holder to respect the duty no normative limitations on what a person is allowed to do, the only boundaries are those of self-interest. To avoid a war of everybody against everybody else it is necessary to have an organization powerful enough to maintain peace and this is the state. During the late middle ages and the time of renaissance these classes gained importance through trade and the wealth that it brought liberalism justified their importance. The more knowledge we have, about physical nature, human nature and society, the better we can and will make our society.
