Heterosexuality is a social institution because it is a regulated, ritualized and organized set of rules and practices that influence and guide individuals through rules and limits on behavior, appearance, thinking and feeling. It was made to be the dominant ideology, implying that heterosexuality is not something inherent in everyone, but is taught to be considered the most normal and natural sexuality. Examining heterosexuality as an institution makes obvious the ways that this dominant ideology is constraining. The heterosexual imaginary is an illusory relationship people in a society have towards the reality of that society.
