RELI 1710 Midterm: RELI Mid Term Review
Document Summary
Who is a jew?- it depends on who you"re asking. There are religious ways and cultural ways of defining jewish people. Is religion different from ethnicity?- some people may identify as jewish but not practice judaism. They may not eat kosher or follow religious practices that still self- identify with the history of judaism. We cannot separate religious practice from cultural practice. Avoiding christian-centric terminology: bc-ad vs bce-ce, old testament vs hebrew bible/tanakh. A myth is a story or narrative that says something to a group about who that group is, where they come from, why they hold beliefs they do, why do we do what we do, etc. They place themselves in the history of the cosmos. Adam and eve- from whom all people descend. Were kicked out of the garden when eve sinned. Answers a lot of questions (why we wear clothes, why women have pain in child birth, why snakes slither).
