Document Summary

Influenced by behavioural and cognitive social learning perspective. Criminal behaviour is determined by events that precede the behaviour and events that follow it. So if you are encouraged by peers to commit crime or witness it often and the consequences of your criminal activity are positive, you will continue to behave like this. Antecedent and consequence events occur from four sources: individual, other people, the act itself and other aspects of the situation. Antisocial attitudes and associates play a large role in predicting crime. Socio economic factors don"t explain individual differences in criminal conduct but act as background conditions that influence reward/cost behaviour. Support for theory comes from treatment programs using this model. Three approaches: clinical judgment, structured professional judgement, statistic based approaches. First approach does not use instrument and relies on expertise. 2nd approach tells person which factors should be considered but gives freedom on how to combine and weigh the various factors.
