Lecture 5: jimmie g was a korsakoff patient who experiences extreme problems with episodic memory. When examined by oliver saks (physician) they found that his long term memories were intact (remembered his childhood) and short term memory intact (could remember experience in the military) and his intelligence was intact. But he could not form any new semantic memories (believed that he was still 19, did not recognize himself or brother). In phase 1 the participant is presented with a series of 3 consonants (e. g. mhd) and told to recall them after a 15 second delay. This is often done with 100% accuracy because they rehearse it in their heads. In phase 2 they are presented with a similar series of consonants and asked to recall it but this time they are asked to conduct another task during the delay (e. g. count backwards by 3). This inhibits the rehearsal and leads to much worse results.
