Zygote: one celled organism formed by the union of a sperm and an egg. Prenatal period: extends from concepion to birth usually encompassing nine months of pregnancy. Germinal stage: irst stage of prenatal development encompassing the irst two weeks ater concepion. On the 7th day, the cell mass begins to implant itself in the uterine wall, this process takes about a week. During the implantaion phase, the placenta begins to form. Embryonic stage: the second stage of prenatal development, lasing two weeks unil the end of the second month. Most of the vital organs and bodily systems begin to form (heart, spine, and brain). This stage the embryo is very vulnerable because the basis physiological structures are being formed. Most miscarriages occur in this stage and major structural birth defects are due to problems that occur during this stage. Fetal stage: third stage of prenatal development, lasing from two months unil birth.
