He does not think nihilism follows from this fact. Ayer also believed in what he called the verification principle that if a statement could neither be falsified nor verified by evidence than that statement have no meaning. Therefore he believed that the phrase what is the meaning of life has no meaning, or there is no answer to that phrase. Ayer and others concluded that many claims made in the history of philosophy and metaphysics were meaningless: what is the is/ought gap, and how is it supposed to be relevant to.
