Lecture 1: neural basis of addiction: person first language refers to referring the person first and the disorder being just one part of them. This involves not using the word addict but rather saying someone who has a substance use disorder. This eliminates some stigma: harm reduction refers to methods aimed at reducing the harms associated with substance use. These programs do not attempt to eliminate or even reduce drug use itself but rather reduce the dangers associated with it. This includes safe injections sites and maintenance therapy: psychoactive drugs are substances that alter cell firing in the brain. These cause intoxication or marked changes in consciousness. It is characterised by a maladaptive pattern of substance use for at least 1 year that has led to significant impairment or distress (determined by clinician). Some people may show tolerance and withdrawal but still be able to fulfill major role obligations. Individuals can become tolerance to some effect but not to others.
