Document Summary

Jet streams are narrow, high speed upper level air flows. The jet stream is a river of fast moving air in the upper atmosphere. Jet stream can have zonal flow which is more or less a straight flow. Usually it is fast and as fast as it can get. It can also have a ridge/trough flow which is in curves and is as slow as it can get. Differential heating is temp differences between poles and equator. It is a major factor in the strength and speed of the jet stream. Arctic is warming faster than other places on the planet. Our winter is staying for a longer period of time because the lazy jet stream is possibly maintaining this wave of frigid air around for longer than usual.
