In the film studies department there are three areas: genre, the filmmaker, and national cinemas. If you continue taking courses in this dept. you can choose any of these in your second year. What is genre: aristotle started this analysis of plays in athens. The public knows the general genre, they make choices based on genre. So three elements here: a critical tool, for the film industry and a guide for spectators. We will focus on genre as a critical tool. What a genre critic will generally try to do is try to understand how the film meets the old conventions (boy meets girl, etc). At the same time, audiences get bored and want to see something new. So there is a balance between formula and originality.
