What is an engineer: term comes from latin word ingenium meaning talent, genius, cleverness, or native ability, over time it became associated with the design and construction of things like ships, roads, canals and bridges. Definition: engineer: person who uses science, mathematics, experience and judgement to create, operate, manage, control or maintain devices, mechanisms, processes, structures, or complex systems. They do this in a rational and economic way with human, societal and natural resources and environmental constraints. Role of the engineer: typically a team activity, team includes: research scientist, engineer, technologist, technician, skilled worker, Social scientists: key link between theory and practical applications, think creatively, lead a team towards a common goal, theoretical knowledge. Machine design, heating, ventilating and refrigerating, thermal and nuclear power generation, manufacturing, quality control, production scheduling. Importance: technical ability will be enriched by participating in one or more societies. Each province has passed a law designating a licencing body.
