Cognitive systems: transforms things in the environment to internal representations. Animal mind: perception senses brain body action world. Robotic mind: perception sensors actuators action world. Disembodied software: example would be amazon"s recommended products system, perception database system display to screen action user input. Perception: changes environment into an internal representation (memory). Psychology vs. cognitive science: psyc = human minds. Distributed cognition: multiple systems working towards the same goal. Two or more cognitive systems changing an environment. Manipulation of representations: brain identifies patterns of neurons and recognizes it as something like a number etc. There is debate as to whether or not this actually happens. It is overwritten every few seconds by new perceptions. Some of these end up becoming long-term memories. Long-term memory: probably stored forever though, some memories may be tough to retrieve. Hippocampus: appears to be important for transforming short-term memories into long-term memories.
