Drop in hours: monday 3-4pm and tuesday 1:30-3pm. September 11th 2017: qualitative has a lot to do with how you view things and yourself, compared to quantitative. Topic for your research this semester: university student accommodation. Ontology: a theory of the nature of realty/existence. Methodology: the theory and principles underlying the choice of research methods. Qualitative: process-driven, words, participants view, nearness, theory building, unstructured, rich data, meaning/experience and feelings, micro. Quantitative: numbers, research"s view, distance, theory testing, programmatic, structured, reliable data, behaviour, macro. Variables you start with a selection of variables. Has to be representative of the group. Inductive data is analyzed to generate theoretical concepts. Understanding research setting from the members of that setting. Sensitize the researcher to what is relevant, but are likely to be revised as the researcher gains new insight. They don"t want to influence their data. Scientific methods, production and social control: students who attend class usually have better grades than students who don"t.
