Brought about due to events occurring at harvard law. Dr. derrick bell was the only black member of the faculty at the time. The school was concerned that dr. bell would leave for another school. Challenges dominant ideas that we all have about the law. Common questions asked by the critical race theory: How is race and racial power constructed and represented within american legal culture. There is no one perspective, theory, methodology, or doctrine. Understand creation and maintenance of white superiority and subordination of people of colour. Structured by ideas/legal doctrines such as fairness, equality, and equal protection under the law (seemingly neutral legal doctrines) Race neutral doctrines are not neutral constructed according to white experiences. This was the first significant acknowledgement by the supreme court that race does matter in terms of interactions with the law. Want to change the relation between race, racism, and law.
