Basque was the purest of catholics b/c they never faced invasion. Local autonomy- special gov. laws provincially while rest of provinces in spain did not. Autonmy hurt them the most as they had these special priv. under the regime. Carlism: a spanish wide doctrine it was a movement against liberalism and centralization and state building. Those in favour of spain wanted a de-centralized state. overwhelming support in the basque country. Sabino arama successful of bringing carlism to the basque province. Carlism gave a base for unification and gave ppl ability to see what there common interests were. (1800"s) Arana"s role unified state with only one identity within the spanish language. Very aggressive state as any sign of diff. was stamped out. Still continue to argue that any kind of settlement must allow for the exp. for the right of people. To have the right to join a soverign basque country.
