Anatomy the study of the body"s form and structure. Physiology the scientific study of the functions of our body. Some cells are even able to move through their surrounding environment: being sensitive and responsive to changes in the surrounding environment, for most cells, reproducing. These basic cell functions are essential for survival of each individual cell. A specialized cellular functions is usually a modification or elaboration of a basic cell function. The glandular cells of the digestive system take advantage of their protein-synthesizing ability and produce and secrete digestive enzymes (proteins) that break down ingested food. Kidney cells are able to control the exchange of materials between the cell and its environment to selectively retain needed substances while eliminating unwanted substances in the urine. Muscle contraction selectively moves internal structures to bring about the shortening of muscle cells, which shows the inherit capability of these cells to produce intracellular movement; this allows the organism to move through the external environment.
