Language- systematic and conventional use of sounds, signed, or written symbols for communication or self-expression. Literacy- the use of visual modes of communication- reading and writing. Decontextualized-not things that are happening right here and right now. Contextualized-things that are happening right here and right now. Grapheme- basic unit of written language; a letter or combination of letters that represents a phoneme. Alphabetic principle- in general, letters match to a speech sound. Orthography- what sound does a particularly speech sound match to. Directional principles- have to learn that we work left to right and from top to bottom. Note: english has 43 phonemes and 70 graphemes. Phonological awareness-the ability to think and talk about groups of sounds, to notice the patterns of sounds. 5 domains of spoken language: phonology- sound system, semantics- meaning system, morphology- grammatical morphemes, syntax- rules for combining words, pragmatics- language use.
