Document Summary

Galaxies are classified based on their appearance at visual wavelengths. Galaxies come in many sizes, colors and shapes. Like with stars, it is difficult to get a complete understanding of galaxies, due to the time spans in which they live. You(cid:374)g gala(cid:454)ies for(cid:373)ed (cid:373)u(cid:272)h earlier i(cid:374) the u(cid:374)i(cid:448)erse(cid:859)s histor(cid:455), a(cid:374)d can only be viewed from great distances. Spiral galaxies: sc galaxies, s (or lenticular) galaxies, sa galaxies, barred spiral galaxy. E0 being a = b spherical shape. With prominent disks and spiral arms from which they get their name. Spiral galaxies are defined by two components: the disk component and the spheroid component. Few hot luminous young stars (as compared to sb and sc) Sb galaxies are between sa and sc based on the size of the nucleus, amount of gas and dust, and the number of hot bright stars. Lots of gas and dust in spiral arms. Many hot, luminous, young stars located in spiral arms.
