Analysis of variance tests whether the mean of a dependent variable for several groups are equal. Doing multiple two sample t tests would result in an increased chance of committing a type i error. This is why anova tests are useful in comparing 2,3,4 or more means simultaneously. Controlled experiment one where one or more independent variables can be deliberately changed.
