Us study -> people who are in 60s and early 70s consider themselves middle- aged. Two main views of personality changes during adulthood depending on circumstances. Changes occurs in new stages of life due to life experiences. Largely genetically determined temperamental qualities that underlie personality. Good childhood executive functions - able to moderate their behaviour and plan and organize. Formed by convergence of genetic and environmental influences. Twin studies - personality gets less heritable as we age. Not one or another of the extreme ends. Study examining big 5 in 54 countries (bleidorn et al 2013) Agreeableness and extraversion increased from youth into middle age in every country. No major negative life events = more distressed than adults who had experienced a few traumatic events. After specific stress threshold (~3 major events), additional traumas may affect mental health. People find meaning from nurturing the next generation, caring for others, enriching lives of others through their work.
