Document Summary

What is motivation: describes the wants or needs that direct behaviour towards a goal. Three components: activation = the start of a behaviour. Activating yourself to move towards a goal: direction = gives direction or purpose to behaviour. Remaining focused, maintaining a steady course to achieve the goal: persistence = encourages us to continue to put in effort. Separate behaviours may seem unrelated to each other but once analysed, a common motive can explain them all. Motivation can be influenced by many factors, possibly simultaneously. Factors can be intrinsic or extrinsic: physiological eg. needing oxygen, food, water, etc, emotional, cognitive, social. Stressing about an exam may make you study for it. Expecting an exam to be hard may make you study more. Other people order dessert so you do too even though you don"t really want it. Psychology: instinct theory = instincts motivate people. Instinct = an automatic, involuntary and unlearned behaviour that is consistently triggered by a particular stimuli.
