White phosphorus, (s) is a white, waxy crystalline solid that reacts spontaneously and violently when exposed to air. White phosphorus is thus stored under water in order to prevent spontaneous oxidation from occurring.

In order to determine the enthalpy of combustion of white phosphorus, 3.56 g of pure (s) was placed in a bomb calorimeter. The following data was obtained:

overall mass of calorimeter  1.000 kg
overall specific heat capacity of calorimeter  2.397 J/g
initial temperature 23.31
final temperature 38.92

Written Response #3
