The Ritter test can help distinguish primary, secondary, and tertiary alcohols. It does this with KMnO4 because KMnO4 solutions react rapidly with primary alcohols, more slowly with secondary alcohols, and not at all, or very slowly with tertiary alcohols. A positive result is a rapid decolorization of the purple permanganate solution. Other kinds of functional groups can also be rapidly oxidized by permanganate, giving a false positive test for alcohol. Which functional group below would not give a false positive Ritter result?

Select one:

(a) aldehyde

(b) triple bond

(c) amine

(d) double bond

(e) saturated hydrocarbon
