High frequency sound waves (more commonly called ultrasound) follow the same rules of reflection and refraction as do light rays. In the figure to the right, sound rays travel through the liver and reflect off the tumor. If the speed of sound is 10% less in the liver than in the medium directly above it, determine the depth to the tumor. Hint: find the angle of refraction and use a right triangle to figure out the distance from the surface of the liver to the surface of the tumor.
