With two Polaroid filters, specially fabricated plastic sheetshaving the property that they transmit light which is linearlypolarized along a certain direction—called the “polarizationdirection” of the filter—determined by material properties of theplastic sheet. Conversely, Polaroid filters absorb light polarizedat right angles to the polarization direction.
Determination of the polarization direction: Find an outsidehorizontal surface lying
between you and the general direction of the sun from which glareis apparent. This
can be a parking lot surface, pool of water or myriad otherobjects. View the object
through one of your filters and rotate it about the line-of-sight.You should observe
the apparent brightness change as you rotate the filter. When thescene is at its
brightest, you have found the polarization direction for yourfilter—it lies in the
horizontal plane for reasons that are well understood but outsidethe scope of this
exercise. You can mark it on your filter with a piece of scotchtape. Determine the
polarization direction of the second filter and mark it.
