A space station is constructed in the shape of a hollow ring ofmass 4.75 104 kg. Members of the crew walk on a deck formed by theinner surface of the outer cylindrical wall of the ring, withradius 130 m. At rest when constructed, the ring is set rotatingabout its axis so that the people inside experience an effectivefree-fall acceleration equal to g. (The figure below shows the ringtogether with some other parts that make a negligible contributionto the total moment of inertia.) The rotation is achieved by firingtwo small rockets attached tangentially to opposite points on theoutside of the ring.
