P1) (The Greenhouse Effect) For this problem, we’ll assume all ofthe radiation from
the sun is in the visible part of the spectrum, and all radiationfrom the earth is in the
infrared.

(a) Model the earth as a blackbody—it absorbs all light from thesun (albedo = 0) and it
is a perfect emitter of blackbody radiation out into space (e = 1).Also assume that the
surface temperature is uniform. Given that the sun’s intensity is1400 W/m2 when
directly overhead, what would be the equilibrium temperature of theearth’s surface?

(b) Now we’ll put in the simplest atmosphere possible—a single thinpane of glass which
hovers above the ground (in the same way that bricks don’t). Thisglass perfectly
transmits visible light and perfectly absorbs infrared light. Onceit absorbs the infrared
light, it re-emits it equally upwards and downwards. Show that thenew equilibrium
temperature of the earth is about 19% higher than your answer topart (a).
