A recent project at a hospital had the following project objective statement: “Reduce the rate of ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) to below the national average.” Members of the project team that created the statement included five pediatric critical care nurses ranging in years of experience from 2 to 20, the PICU’s nurse educator (a former PICU nurse with 20 years of experience at several different hospitals), the hospital’s infection control specialist (a former PICU nurse who now tracks nosocomial, or hospital-acquired, infections such as VAP and facilitates efforts to reduce them), a representative of the quality department (a trained facilitator skilled in data collection and quality analysis tools), and a respiratory therapist. One of the PICU nurses was selected as project manager. In your report, address the following questions:

1. How does the project objective statement given fare with respect to the criteria for an effective project objective statement?

2. Critique the team composition for the PICU’s VAP reduction project. Specifically, what do you think of the competency, representation, and size of the team?
