Nitrous oxide has three possible Lewis structures given below.

 

Given the following bond lengths on the table below,

 167 pm
   115  pm
  120 pm
  147 pm
  110 pm

 

(a) Why is the bond length for N—N bond length in is 112 pm and that the N—O bond length is 119 pm.

(b) What are the formal charges for the different structures?

(c) Can you eliminate any of the resonance structures on the basis of formal charges? Will it be consistent with the observation?
